The Physics of Dense Suspensions

چکیده
Dense suspensions of particles are relevant to many applications and a key platform for developing fundamental physics out-of-equilibrium systems. They present challenging flow properties, apparently turning from liquid solid upon small changes in composition or, intriguingly, the driving forces applied them. The emergent close ubiquitous jamming transition (and some extent glass gelation transitions) provides common principles with which achieve consistent interpretation vast set phenomena reported literature. In light this, we review current state understanding regarding relation between at particle scale rheology macroscopic scale. We further show how this perspective opens new avenues development continuum models dense suspensions.

Generality of shear thickening in dense suspensions.
Suspensions are of wide interest and form the basis for many smart fluids. For most suspensions, the viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate, that is, they shear thin. Few are reported to do the opposite, that is, shear thicken, despite the longstanding expectation that shear thickening is a generic type of suspension behaviour. Here we resolve this apparent contradiction. We demonstrate...
متن کاملDroplet formation and scaling in dense suspensions.
When a dense suspension is squeezed from a nozzle, droplet detachment can occur similar to that of pure liquids. While in pure liquids the process of droplet detachment is well characterized through self-similar profiles and known scaling laws, we show here the simple presence of particles causes suspensions to break up in a new fashion. Using high-speed imaging, we find that detachment of a su...
متن کاملDense colloidal suspensions under time-dependent shear.
We consider the nonlinear rheology of dense colloidal suspensions under a time-dependent simple shear flow. Starting from the Smoluchowski equation for interacting Brownian particles advected by shearing (ignoring fluctuations in fluid velocity), we develop a formalism which enables the calculation of time-dependent, far-from-equilibrium averages. Taking shear stress as an example, we derive ex...
